D.A.R.E. Parent Alert - Methamphetamine

Elementary Family Talk

Tips for Parents

  • Establish family rules that make clear that drug use will not be tolerated.

  • Educate yourself about drugs, so you can talk informatively with your children and answer their questions.

  • Spend time with your children listening to their concerns and showing how much you love and care for them.

  • Recognize that YOU are their most important role model.

  • Because peer pressure is a major factor in teen drug use, know your children’s friends.

  • Talk with other parents, Try to establish uniform rule that make access to drugs harder, such as curfew and the amount of spending money they receive.

  • If a problem exists, get help! Don’t say “Not my child!”

  • Teach them about the many positive alternatives to drug use.

Lesson Preparation

 II.   Lesson One  (One Hour)

Allow Participants 15 minutes to read Lesson (May want to use graphic organization sheet for this activity). During this time, ask them to Read, Write, and Respond to the following:

  1. What are the objectives of the lesson, and how does each activity develop these concepts?

  2. What would you tell someone else about what you would want the students to know and be able to do at the end of this lesson?

  3. When and How would you need to use facilitation skills in this lesson?  List specific examples.

Tell them they will be using this information following the reading activity.

Using the Think, Pair, Share strategy, have participants find a partner and share the information they have recorded. They should then go through each activity and discuss how the lesson would be taught in a classroom setting.

The facilitator will hold a group discussion regarding the lesson using questioning techniques to check for understanding and clarification of information concepts in the lesson.   It is important that the officers understand why each activity is being taught and they have the background information to facilitate the activities with the students.

The PowerPoint Presentation related to the lessons may be used to help facilitate the discussion: however, it is important to use active learning strategies in these activities.

III.  Lesson Two: (One Hour)  Follow above format (section II) with a   different partner

Participants need time to read the lesson to establish their base of knowledge and clarify any questions or concerns they might have regarding the content.  Include the resource information in this section.

 IV.  Closure Activity:

Facilitate a closing discussion to check for understanding and clarify any questions or concerns that may remain regarding the lessons.

  V.  Reflection:

What have you learned today that will impact your behavior or attitude in the classroom?
